Aim To reconstruct the spread of invasive wetland species using herbarium specimens and to develop a method that accounts for the biases associated with this type of historical record. Location Southern Québec. Methods The temporal and spatial distribution of herbarium specimens of vascular plants was examined. Six invasive species that are mainly found in wetlands were compared with five native, non‐expanding hydrophytes. The cumulative number of locations was plotted against time to construct invasion curves. For native species, this ‘invasion curve’ indicates the spatiotemporal distribution of the sampling for herbarium specimens of wetland plants. It also represents the history of the state of knowledge of the distribution of native species. Deviation from the native species invasion curve can be used to describe the spread of invasive species. For every year on record, the cumulative number of locations of each exotic species was divided by the cumulative number of locations of all native species, and the proportions obtained were plotted against time. Periods of invasiveness were then delineated. Results During the twentieth century, two periods of intensive herbarium specimen collection in Québec can be clearly distinguished, i.e. from 1930 to 1940 and from 1950 to 1985. Several periods of invasiveness were delineated for Butomus umbellatus L. (1922–35), Hydrocharis morsus‐ranae L. (1957–96), Lycopus europaeus L. (1963–2000), Lythrum salicaria L. (1890–1905, 1923–46), Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel (1963–84) and Rorippa amphibia (L.) Bess. (1929–34, 1943–52, 1971–79). Main conclusions Accounting for sampling biases associated with herbarium specimens is important in order to objectively delineate periods of invasiveness for exotic species. The spread of wetland vascular plant species can be reconstructed using herbarium specimens, even when the phenomenon is rapid, but the reconstruction is certainly more accurate when the invasion occurred during an active sampling period. The highly variable sampling effort for herbarium specimens in Québec and in other regions strongly cautions against using herbarium data without correction procedures.  相似文献

The arrival pattern of glass eels of the shortfin eel Anguilla australis and longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii was studied over a two successive migration seasons in the Grey River, South Island, New Zealand. Fishing was carried out on selected nights during September to November, for 3 h per night during 2000 and 2001. The number of shortfin glass eels exceeded longfins in both years; earliest glass eels (September) were larger than later glass eels (November), and longfins larger than shortfins, but there were significant differences in size between years for both species. Environmental variables affecting recruitment differed between years, but common variables for both years were sampling date, time after high tide (incoming tide preferred), time after sunset and moon phase; the influence of moon phase appeared to be expressed both through tides (spring tides preferred) and moonlight. During the year of higher discharge variability, both increasing discharge and increased turbidity were also important.  相似文献

Abstract A population of Hemideina crassidens (the Wellington tree weta) was monitored over a 4‐year period after the eradication of Rattus exulans (the Polynesian rat kiore) and Gallirallus australis australis (the South Island weka) from Nukuwaiata (Chetwode Islands), Pelorus Sound, New Zealand. A novel survey technique (entrance scores) was used in combination with a conventional technique (random searches for active weta) to measure changes in weta population parameters after the removal of predation pressure and to investigate impacts of exotic predators on tree weta. Tree weta density did not increase markedly over the 4‐year period, but the proportion of active adults did increase. Weta were observed to move into larger and more crowded galleries (refuges), to occupy galleries closer to the ground, and to spend less time sitting in gallery entrances. It was concluded that endemic tree weta are well adapted to withstand some introduced vertebrate predators but are able to live a more “relaxed” lifestyle in the absence of this predation. The most significant change detected was in weta age structure, with adults increasing their proportion of the population.  相似文献

Background: Phragmites australis dieback syndrome, recently reported for the Mediterranean basin, features several symptomatic traits among which the clumping habit seems to be one of the most diagnostic.

Aims: We evaluated the effect of water depth on the intensity of the clumping habit and evaluated the diagnostic role of other traits.

Methods: We investigated patterns of macro-morphological (culm height and diameter, flowering head and dead apical bud rates) and demographic (density) traits of P. australis in function of submersion (PF-permanent vs. NF-temporary) at five Italian wetland sites. We related the occurrence of clumping and its frequency with water depth.

Results: There were clear trends, modulated by site-specific effects, for most of the considered traits in function of the duration of submersion. The clumping rate was close to zero in NF-stands, reached high values in PF-stands and was positively correlated with water depth.

Conclusions: We have shown that permanent submersion with deep water levels plays a crucial role in the occurrence of reed dieback. As all other considered traits, with the exception of the occurrence of dead apical buds, well correlate with the clumping habit, we propose using clumping as a key indicator for detecting potential reed dieback.  相似文献

The conifer Agathis australis (New Zealand kauri; Araucariaceae) has a significant influence on soil processes beneath its canopies, reducing soil pH, stalling nitrogen cycling processes, and sometimes forming podzols. Distinctive plant species assemblages have been anecdotally observed to occur in association with A. australis stands; however, the authenticity of these proposed associations has not been formally assessed. Owing to the effects of A. australis on its soil environment and the recorded vegetation patterns, we hypothesized that this species may act as a foundation species, playing a significant role in structuring plant community composition in its vicinity. To test this, we investigated the influence of proximity to A. australis on plant community composition at stand and individual tree scales. We also investigated compositional variation with distance from the conifer Dacrydium cupressinum (rimu, Podocarpaceae) within the same forests to directly compare A. australis effects to those of another large conifer. We examined changes in stand composition relative to the abundance of each of these conifers at two forests, and measured changes in environmental conditions and plant composition with increasing distance from mature individuals at one of the same and one other study site. The organic soil formed beneath A. australis individuals was highly acidic, with high levels of NH4‐N, carbon and total nitrogen, but low levels of NO3‐N. We recorded a difference in species composition in the vicinity of A. australis compared to forest without this species in the same environment, describing three groups of species: stress‐tolerant species dependent on the presence of A. australis within mature forest; those dependent on areas with A. australis absent; and those with distributions unaffected by A. australis presence. Such effects on the abiotic and biotic environments were not recorded in the vicinity of individuals of D. cupressinum. These results highlight the substantial effect that A. australis has in enhancing landscape‐scale habitat heterogeneity and influencing overall forest diversity.  相似文献

Aim To test the congruence of phylogeographic patterns and processes between a woodland agamid lizard (Diporiphora australis) and well‐studied Australian wet tropics fauna. Specifically, to determine whether the biogeographic history of D. australis is more consistent with a history of vicariance, which is common in wet tropics fauna, or with a history of dispersal with expansion, which would be expected for species occupying woodland habitats that expanded with the increasingly drier conditions in eastern Australia during the Miocene–Pleistocene. Location North‐eastern Australia. Methods Field‐collected and museum tissue samples from across the entire distribution of D. australis were used to compile a comprehensive phylo‐geographic dataset based on c. 1400 bp of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), incorporating the ND2 protein‐coding gene. We used phylogenetic methods to assess biogeographic patterns within D. australis and relaxed molecular clock analyses were conducted to estimate divergence times. Hierarchical Shimodaira–Hasegawa tests were used to test alternative topologies representing vicariant, dispersal and mixed dispersal/vicariant biogeographic hypotheses. Phylogenetic analyses were combined with phylogeographic analyses to gain an insight into the evolutionary processes operating within D. australis. Results Phylogenetic analyses identified six major mtDNA clades within D. australis, with phylogeographic patterns closely matching those seen in many wet tropics taxa. Congruent phylogeographic breaks were observed across the Black Mountain Corridor, Burdekin and St Lawrence Gaps. Divergence amongst clades was found to decrease in a north–south direction, with a trend of increasing population expansion in the south. Main conclusions While phylogeographic patterns in D australis reflect those seen in many rain forest fauna of the wet tropics, the evolutionary processes underlying these patterns appear to be very different. Our results support a history of sequential colonization of D. australis from north to south across major biogeographic barriers from the late Miocene–Pleistocene. These patterns are most likely in response to expanding woodland habitats. Our results strengthen the data available for this iconic region in Australia by exploring the understudied woodland habitats. In addition, our study shows the importance of thorough investigations of not only the biogeographic patterns displayed by species but also the evolutionary processes underlying such patterns.  相似文献

Abstract Mensurative experiments investigated the effects of different observers on estimates of the density of shoots of two species of seagrass: Posidonia australis Hook and Zostera capricorni Aschers. Balanced programmes of sampling were used to examine variation in counts of seagrass shoots attributable to different observers, sizes of quadrats, depths and locations within large beds of each species of seagrass. A separate experiment examined differences between novice observers and a more experienced observer, when an ‘optimal’ size of sampling unit was used. Estimated densities of Zostera shoots varied inconsistently among observers, quadrats, depths and locations. Differences between observers were not affected by the size of quadrat used to count Posidonia shoots, but varied between locations in the seagrass bed. Experience had only a minor impact on biases. Only two of 12 novices produced counts that were different from the experienced observer. These results emphasize the importance of considering both accuracy and precision in the design of field studies of seagrasses.  相似文献

The timing of Anguilla spp. glass eel recruitment into the Waikato River, North Island, New Zealand, was studied over a 2 year period (2004–2005). While glass eels of both the shortfin eel Anguilla australis and the endemic longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii were caught, the former comprised >97% of the species composition. There was a positive correlation of glass eel migrations with spring tides, with peak migration periods typically occurring within a few hours of the peak of high tide, and between 2 and 4 days after the day of spring tide. Both water temperature and discharge had significant inverse relationships with glass eel catches, with temperature explaining >30% of the variance in catch periodicity. Comparison of catch data 30 years apart showed that main migration periods appear to occur several weeks earlier today than previously. Reduced catch per unit effort and duration of runs from recent years' sampling (compared with the 1970s) indicate that a reduction in recruitment may also have occurred during this period, something recorded in other temperate species of Anguilla .  相似文献

Minute size (nanism) and short live cycle (ephemerism) are characteristic features of many plants living in seasonal wetlands in Mediterranean biomes. Lepuropetalon (Celastraceae) is a monotypic genus with an antitropical distribution (disjunct in temperate regions of both Americas). L. spathulatum is the smallest vascular plant of Chile, not recorded in herbaria for decades. Its distribution, ecology and phytosociology were studied based on herbarium vouchers and field observations. L. spathulatum occurs in the fringes of vernal pools, on oligotrophic sandy soils and in grazed Acacia caven pseudo‐savannas. Its distribution is linked to the Mediterranean and Submediterranean bioclimates. Associated species are other dwarfish annuals, many of them originating from the Western Palearctic subkingdom and characteristic for the class Isoëto‐Nanojuncetea. Other floristic elements are Chilean endemics and species with a disjunction to California (character species of the Nanojuncetea australis). L. spathulatum is not a rare plant in Chile, but is often overlooked because of its dwarfish and ephemeral habit. Although most populations occurred in secondary habitats and the species can tolerate disturbance, intensification of agriculture, forest plantations and modification of the hydrological conditions may threaten the species in the long term.
